I only know that I kind of dig it:
Thanks to the Coachella announcement, and my subsequent search through the confirmed and rumored lineups of other summer festivals, I've found some new music!
Ladies and gentlemen, Vampire Weekend. The band with a name that makes you think I'm introducing you to Goth Glitter Night 2008 when in reality they just look like a bunch of nerds that raided the sale rack at Gap and know how to play some instruments.
I'm planning on catching them during Popscene next week and it looks like it'll be good times. It also looks like I'll need to break out a periwinkle polo shirt.
CONFESSION: The main reason why I Googled them after seeing their name on so many lineup lists was because of my previous obsession with vampires as a youth. No shame!
You really can't knock this when you find out the guy plays entirely by ear and makes even T-Pain sound he could get airtime in Bloomingdale's.
Check the goodness!
And the original, in case you're unfamiliar with Rihanna's Umbrella (ey ey ey...).
But, I think my favorite of his so far is his rendition of T-Pain's "Buy U A Drank". No, seriously, if you watch anything on YouTube today let it be this.
Here's the original for reference. This stuff kind of reminds me of the Hidden Beach Unwrapped recordings only way way more interesting and less elevator-friendly. The Mozart of Hip Hop and R&B? I'm inclined to agree.
First off, Tay Zonday strikes again with "Cherry Chocolate Rain."
It was only a matter of time before some major company picked him up to do something for them. I'm almost almost tempted to try Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper. (Wait, what?)
I especially dig the parts where they 'fitted Tay out in stereotypical Hip Hop gear with the gold foil printed hoodie, flat-brimmed baseball cap and... the gold fronts!
In a completely different swing of things, have you guys heard of Charice Pempengco? She's a 14-year-old Filipino girl who sounds like she swallowed Beyoncé, Mariah and Whitney 'cause the girl can sing. Okay, not even sing, but SANG. GIRL CAN SANG. Seriously, when I first saw her clips on YouTube I had tears tears in my eyes. Like I was some 57-year-old mom at a random girl's wedding! (You know how mom's get.)
Anyway, she's been around the internets for a while and got shown on E! because of her talent. Hopefully the Swedish group that picked her up to record an album won't make her sound like ass. But, you know, I'll buy it regardless.
Here's a clip of her on a Star King, a Korean variety show that saw her on YouTube and brought her out to Korea to perform. This boy band/pop group called Super Junior basically falls the eff out once she starts singing, so awesome. In fact, the entire peanut gallery's reactions make this clip even more awesome with her already-awesome singing.
Comic-Con, as usual, didn't disappoint. Granted, I didn't go to any panels, but I spent (too much) money in the dealer room buying cool stuff, ate at Tin Fish way more than I should have (can't help it if it's in my direct beeline from hotel to convention center), said wassup to Aaron McGruder (creator of The Boondocks), ran into a dead-on lookalike of Andre 3000 of OutKast (anyone know if he's a comic nerd?), participated in the masquerade with my girls the HCC in our Five Star Stories costumes and won...
Best in Show!
I really thought it was a total crap shoot on who was going to win.
SDCC generally brings out the best of the best in costumers and with
the color guard awesomeness of the Greasy Potter skit (wait for it on
YouTube, seriously), larger-than-life Pinky & The Brain, Okami
furry, peach-butt goodness, Josie & The Pussycat Dolls Revue of
"Don't You Wish Your Hero was Hot Like Me?" (again, wait for it on
YouTube), Dr. Who Dalek, awesome Transformers, World of Warcraft
snake-lady, multi-armed thing... oh man, I could go on, but there were
over 150 people in about 50 groups that competed over the weekend!
The competitors generally have an idea of what they won while they're waiting backstage during the awards ceremony because the staff lines everyone up in order so it's easier to get everyone on stage. When they stuck us at the end of the line during the trophy distribution (the spot for Best in Show), AJ and I seriously kept turning our heads (and almost taking each other out in the process) to see if anyone was going to line up behind us. We even kept telling ourselves, "Well, they could be bringing someone in from the other side of the stage..." I was basically in denial until I had the trophy in my hands. We also won two industry awards: a $150 credit to Anime Pavilion for their favorite anime costume which we split between the 12 of us (Paradise Kiss DVD #1 for me), and $100 plus a pretty awesome sword from The Testmarket Evolution for best anime costume.
Much love to Judy, AJ, Aimee and Char and our incredibly amazing and patient handlers (HCC Transport Team) who totally helped the five of us out when we became clothed masses of uselessness thanks to our costumes. Marc, Jenn, Oscar, Kim, Arthur, Josh and Robert... you guys ROCK! Go go mighty HCC Transport Team!
As for the subject title of this post, thanks to That Guy Can Hella Draw (.com) and Dancehall Dan, who were playing random clips while we were chillin' in the hotel room over the weekend, I now have a new default MySpace song:
Chocolate raaaaaaaaaaain...
One of the best music videos I've seen in a long time!
And, while we're on the subject of YouTube, here's some Imitation PoPs Uchuu Sentai NOIZ for you:
I'm usually not one to post YouTube videos with a, "HAY GUYZ, CHECK THIS OUT!!" but we all have our moments of weakness:
I think I need to see a remake of this video done in Harajuku with the gothic lolitas as the dancers and a bunch of NOIZ cosplayers pretending to be the band. Please be sure to stick around to see the goth b-girl do a headspin, thanks.
