I think I've come down with a case of post-con SARS, so this will be short. Comic-Con, as usual, didn't disappoint. Highlights included catching the panels for Legion (angels with machine guns), District 9 (wassup Peter Jackson), Extract (Jason Bateman hollerifyouhearme), Zombieland (hella violent), 2012 (it's the end of the world as we know it), Iron Man 2 (Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle and Sam Rockwell in the same room? Yes, please, may I have another? Also, that movie is going to be hellatight.com/cantwait) and hearing Kevin Smith talk about the moistness of the Twilight room from last year as well as reenact a hockey locker room circle jerk/bukkake scene on stage. I love that guy.
Hammed it up for a bit as Flora The Good Fairy from Sleeping Beauty with AJ and Judy and it never ceases to amaze me how popular we are in those things. The amount of excitement and joy we get from people while we're out in about is damn near contagious. (Much like this cold I think I have.)
Thanks to a tip from a friendly girl who was waiting in line with me, I got to see the touring Alice in Wonderland exhibit as well. Originally promoted via Twitter, you had to go to an off-site location to pick up a ticket (in this case, a rusty brass key attached to a tag) which gave you a time to return to go on your tour. Rather than talk more about it, how about I just show you pics?

From PMX's site:
The whole Hip Hop dance exhibition thing is totally nothing new, but it's completely surprising to me to see PMX putting one on. Shoot, they even quoted KRS-one (famous Hip Hop emcee) in their write up! Granted, I'm sure there will be a bunch of kids who've never seen anything like this before and will try to attribute it to some "cool Japanese shit," but in a way, I'd rather have folks be exposed to the talent and dedication that surrounds b-boying (that's breakdancing, folks) in any way than be completely ignorant of it.Be a part of Asian Culture history this year and join us at .pure furisuta (.pure freestyle/.pufuri). Pacific Media Expo will host the first hip hop dance exhibition to ever be properly introduced. This event will be one night of performances by different crews from Southern California and one afternoon of workshops.
Between the lolitas that will be swarming the joint because of Angelic Pretty, the b-boys practicing 1990's and the Visual Kei fans that are usually in attendance (no word yet of who they'll be bringing over from Japan to perform this year, though) PMX is going to be a grand clash of subcultures.
One word for all that: NICE!
Then there's Gogol Bordello on the 29th, Common on September 5th, The Roots (yes, again) on September 13th, Amy Winehouse on September 21st, and Girl talk on the 29th.
OH. BOY.
I uploaded a metric ton of pictures last night, here are some highlights! First, backstage shots of the HCC and crew getting ready for the masquerade. Proof that not only did our friends help us be big dorks on stage, but they actually did help us get ready and move. Seriously, we couldn't have done it without them!
You can see the secret to the Nein antlers: two wooden dowels, Judy getting into her costume with not one, not two, but three people helping her, a back view of Char's Mr. Washington and Aimee using my tiny mirror to put her geisha make-up on. Full set, taken by Marc, can be seen here.
Next, some shots from Comic-Con that have absolutely nothing to do with the goobers of HCC.
That first pic is of the Beowulf mural that was created during the convention. From the front, the perspective of all the figures looked really weird and skewed, but when you looked through the concave lens they had set up the entire scene became 3D. Pretty sweet! Rest of the Comic-Con photos are here.
Finally, my old roommate Mark just started his life as a JET over in Hyogo, Japan. His recent email to me and the homies said that his sweat is sweating and he's about four shades darker thanks to the heat. Before he left, we threw him a small going away party and I let Mark rock my Mugen cosplay for a hot second... what a nerd.
The rest of his photos, including more fake sword deaths, are here.
Tomorrow is going to be off the hook!
L-R:
1) This couple had on an awesome set of sentai (Kamen Rider? Oh, who am I kidding, they all look like Power Rangers to me.) costumes.
2) Mario Brothers!
3) Midna from Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess. She did an awesome job on the headpiece.
4) Ninjas from The Village Hidden Among The Cherry Blossoms. Which was really just an excuse for Marc, Jon Jon and his two sons plus their friend Jodel to wear pink polo shirts and carry swords.
5) Sharaku from the Japanese indie band FLOPPY. She said I was the first person to recognize her, poor thing (although it doesn't surprise me), and that someone had previously gone up to her and said, "You know, outside of your outfit, your hair and make-up could totally make you Sharaku from Metronome." D'oh! (They're the same Sharaku, friends.)

Whatever germs I got on the East Coast have been holding onto their throne in my sinuses for the entire week. Therefore, I'm going to take some more cold medicine and pass out. Here, have some pictures:
More photos here. Good times, good times.
Maybe one of these days I'll get back to writing about my weekends rather than bombarding y'all with pictures. But, today is not one of those days! So, let's begin with What I Did Over the Weekend in Pictures:
1) Caught a short performance of Imitation PoPs Uchuu Sentai NOIZ at Pacific Media Expo. Half the fun of the show was seeing their (hardcore) Japanese fans mosh the eff out in front of the stage. Whereas seeing 6' tall White guys at Rock shows mosh is a little scary (especially if you're shorter than them), seeing 5' tall Japanese girls do it = GOOD TIMES. I was totally wearing the wrong shoes, otherwise I would've gotten into that action with them! NOIZ was totally entertaining, even if PMX's sound was a little wonky during their set. I ended up buying their album, EGO-style, even though I told myself I wasn't going to. Weak, I tell you, I'm weak.
2) Attended the Volks Halloween Tea Party event as aimee's guest at a swankety swank honest-to-goodness mansion in Palos Verdes. Surrounded by expensive resin dolls, I seriously considered trying to buy one for a good minute before I remembered how much I really wanted a Vivienne Westwood purse. So, instead of spending money, I took lots of pictures. The endorphin rush doesn't last as long as the whole buying thing, but my bank account is sure as hell happier. The entire Volks staff dressed up for the occasion and I can now honestly say I have a new fetish: Japanese guys in maid outfits. HOLLER! Yeah, I'm weird, I know.
Tarragon smells a lot like crushed dandelion leaves when you chop it.
This revelation brought on by the fact that I just finshed making a little under two dozen cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.
And that little endeavor was sparked because some friends of mine and I will be cosplaying from Ouran High School Host Club tomorrow. The cucumber sandwiches? Well, we are cosplaying a bunch of hosts, so why not step it up a notch and offer "high" tea to the ladies? Granted, my sandwiches are hardly high tea worthy, but close your eyes and maybe you'll get it. If any of you are going to Yaoi Con tomorrow, come check us out in all our crossplaying glory! I'll be one of the red-headed twins.
Tomorrow night brings on Diamond D to a old school warehouse party in SF, map point and all! I haven't been to one of those since my raver days when I was still going to school at UCSB. Dude, a map point. Dude, the party goes on till 6am. Dude, I really need to stop talking about my raver days. It just makes me feel old.
Anyway, I plan on being butt tired by Sunday afternoon, but I'm still going to CAPSULE: a Street Festival for Design in Hayes Valley later on that day. I imagine I'll be a wandering zombie, enthralled by all the cool things I really don't need but want. But, really, that sounds like any other weekend.
So what's everyone else up to this weekend?
Before getting hyphy at the show I talked about previously, I spent most of the day in SF's Japantown nerding it out with some friends at the Japantown Anime Faire. Outside of promoting J-Rock Connection, eating a lot of food and making devious lolita plans for next year, I took some photos.
Pictured is my good friend Judy in her Matsumoto costume from BLEACH. Even without a wig brush Judy oozes sauciness! We'll be heading out to LA later this week to participate in the glorified Final Fantasy walk-on during Video Games Live.
More photographed costumed madness here!
