After suffering from a mini-plague for the last few days I'm starting to feel a little normal (minus the weird sort-of sore throat that doesn't want to go away)! During my action-packed weekend of staying at home, coughing a lot, medicating myself and sleeping I accomplished the following:
Several hours where I felt really stupid thanks to Professor Layton and The Curious Village on the DS. Which I highly recommend, regardless of my severe lack of cognitive abilities regarding spatial relationships. (Okay, I don't even know if that phrase makes sense. I are art skuul graduite.)
Finished the LoveCom anime and am ready to make really stupid faces and poses with Aimee when we cosplay it at... Fanime? Anyone know what the major differences are between the anime and the manga? The ending of the anime made me want a tighter resolution.
Started cleaning the disaster of my living space. Holy crap. Still a work in-progress.
Folded laundry to the David Sides CD that came in the mail. As much as I love his piano renditions of Akon and such, listening to it kind of makes me feel like I'm 48 rather than 28. I equate it to folks that dig the Hidden Beach Unwrapped recordings of Hip Hop songs over the originals. Seriously, man, stick me in an elevator and tell Jenkins to take me to the 14th floor, why don't you?
Anyway, my parents are coming back from their two-month (!!) jaunt through the Motherland in a few days. Should be interesting to see what their first food requests will be upon arrival (the last two international trips they've had had them coming back to the tune of "We want hamburgers!") and stories of the family back there. Other than that, I've got three deadlines this week! Yay.
I caught the SF Film Festival's showing of Paprika last night. From Apple's synopsis:
Don't let the trailer fool you, this anime has some disturbing imagery (especially if you're one of those folks that gets creeped out by dolls and/or clowns), but the story and the art is pretty awesome. It's one of those movies where you'll be constantly questioning yourself on what's reality within the story, so pay attention (and don't fall asleep like my friend did, the punk). Unlike Miyazaki's stuff that got widespread theatrical releases, Paprika is definitely an adults' movie and definitely not something for everyone. I laughed out loud, mentally went "What the...?!" a lot and loved all the eye candy, so I hope it gets a good reception when it's released to a bigger audience.29 year old Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18 year old “dream detective,” code named PAPRIKA, who can enter into people’s dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis.
We took this before heading to the theater and I always introduce James to my friends as my Senior Prom Date (hence the second picture). I can usually count on him to accompany me to stuff that he's totally unfamiliar with (like trippy anime movies about dreams) while still keeping a good sense of humor about it. He's also the punk that fell asleep during the movie. Good thing I whacked him before he started snoring in the theater.
Before getting hyphy at the show I talked about previously, I spent most of the day in SF's Japantown nerding it out with some friends at the Japantown Anime Faire. Outside of promoting J-Rock Connection, eating a lot of food and making devious lolita plans for next year, I took some photos.
Pictured is my good friend Judy in her Matsumoto costume from BLEACH. Even without a wig brush Judy oozes sauciness! We'll be heading out to LA later this week to participate in the glorified Final Fantasy walk-on during Video Games Live.
More photographed costumed madness here!
